In the event of a natural hazard, such as severe weather, including a tornado, flooding, or snowstorm, you may be instructed to take shelter in a NAIT building.
Instructions/Actions
In the event of an instructed Shelter-In-Place:
- Take shelter indoors (interior floor room, closet, or hallway).
- During a tornado, move to the lowest level of the building or to a closet, bathroom or under a staircase. At the very least, get under a sturdy piece of furniture. If shelter is unavailable or there is no time to get indoors, lie in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.
- If there is a hazardous material release or spill nearby, close or block ventilation fans and heating/air-conditioning system vents to prevent contaminated outside air from entering the area.
- Close doors and windows.
- Stay away from exterior walls and windows.
- Stay close to the ground and protect your head from flying objects.
- Remain sheltered until emergency services give the ‘All Clear.’
If you hear or witness any kind of activity that may be a risk to the NAIT Community, call NAIT Protective Services at 780.471.7477.
What to do
- Download the NAIT Alert App
- Remain sheltered until emergency services give an ‘All Clear.’
What not to do
- Do not exit the building during the shelter-in-place and ensure you wait for the ‘All Clear’ from emergency services or through the NAIT Alert App.
- Do not change your route to a classroom or office to gather your personal belongings. When you hear the shelter-in-place, ensure you make your way to the nearest classroom/shelter as quickly as possible.
- Avoid large rooms, if possible.
- Do not use elevators.
