In the event of a severe or life-threatening injury or illness on campus, ensure that the scene has been deemed safe to perform any medical actions and follow the instructions to safely retrieve help from emergency services.
Instructions/Actions
- Notification
Call 911 or direct a nearby individual to call emergency services. Afterwards, call NAIT Protective Services (NPS) at 780.471.7477.
- Response
- Observe the area and approach the injured person only if it is safe to do so (for example, there is no gas leak or fire).
- If it is safe to do so, stay with the injured/ill person until emergency services arrive. Do not move them unless it is essential for their safety.
- If qualified, provide first aid.
Our emergency warden program trains all NAIT staff how to evacuate, which is an essential part of NAIT’s emergency response. Follow any NAIT staff member’s directions, as they are knowledgeable and are trained to guide the NAIT community to safety.
If you hear or witness any kind of activity that may be a risk to the NAIT Community, call NPS at 780.471.7477.
What to do
- Download the NAIT Alert App.
- Ensure that NPS has the appropriate information, such as exact location and circumstance.
- If you are a trained first aider, ensure that you are performing actions that emergency services have instructed you to do.
- Send a bystander for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and/or first aid kit, if required.
- If you are uncomfortable performing first aid or medical actions, stay with the individual and wait for emergency services.
What not to do
- Do not perform any medical actions if the scene has been deemed unsafe.
- Do not move the severely ill or injured person(s) unless it is essential for their safety.
