COVID-19 Update for Jan. 21: Positive cases of COVID-19

Posted: Jan 21, 2022 3:49 PM   |  Updated: Mar 10, 2022 1:50 PM

We are providing this update as part of our commitment to sharing timely and accurate information with the NAIT community about COVID-19 cases impacting our campuses. With the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19 spreading rapidly in Alberta, NAIT has seen an increase in positive COVID-19 cases among the campus community.

Thirteen members of NAIT Athletics have reported positive test results to NAIT Health Services this week, resulting in the cancellation or postponement of some athletics activities. Some of these individuals were on campus within 14 days of symptom onset or a positive test, but not necessarily during their infectious period.

All confirmed cases are currently isolating and following the direction of Alberta Health Services. To protect the individuals’ privacy, we will not be releasing any information that could lead to their identification. Supports for learning and working have been arranged while individuals are required to isolate at home.

As a precaution, NAIT has cancelled all games associated with the impacted members until further notice. The situation will be reviewed Monday to determine whether practice will proceed. Players and coaches who did not test positive will be advised to rapid test before practice.

Members of the NAIT community who may have been in contact with those who tested positive for COVID-19 have been contacted directly by NAIT and advised to screen for symptoms daily before coming to campus.

We wish these individuals, as well as other members of our community who have tested positive, a speedy recovery.

Keeping the NAIT community safe

Although we have seen an increase in the number of cases reported to NAIT Health Services, we want to reassure you that we continue to monitor public health guidance and the trajectory of the pandemic and take steps to support a safe and healthy campus community.

We have put in place enhanced measures to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on our campuses. We have introduced a vaccine policy, upgraded air filtration and enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols. We require everyone to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces and have reintroduced face shields in some settings. We have limited on-campus attendance as much as possible by temporarily shifting lecture and theory classes online. As well, we have a rapid response plan to guide our response to cases of COVID-19 at NAIT.

Do your part to slow the spread

Everyone is reminded of their responsibility to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, both on and off campus.

  • stay home when you are sick, even if you test negative
  • get your booster dose as soon as you are eligible
  • wear a well-fitting high-quality mask
  • if you test positive for COVID-19 and have been on campus within the previous 14 days, submit a COVID-19 Incident Report through myCority to NAIT Health Services
  • maintain two metres of physical distance in common areas and as much distance as possible in learning spaces
  • follow area-specific safety protocols
  • follow public health measures

Before coming to campus, follow the Coming to Campus checklist and complete the AHS COVID-19 Self-Assessment.
