We are pleased to announce that NAIT's main campus will be re-opening tomorrow.

As a result of the environmental monitoring following the recent fire incident at Hangar 11, the air quality has been deemed safe for operations on NAIT Main Campus to resume.

We want to thank all NAIT students and staff for their patience and cooperation today. Your safety and well-being are always our top priorities, and we appreciate your understanding as we worked to ensure a safe environment for all. We encourage you to monitor your emails for any correspondence from instructors if your exam schedule was disrupted, and to check the NAIT ALERT app for updates, should anything change.

We will continue to monitor air quality on main campus, but if any students or staff feel unwell after arriving, please connect with NAIT Health Services (Main Campus S105). Alternatively, we encourage students and staff with health concerns to connect with their program contact and manager to discuss alternative accommodations. For any student affected by this incident, counselling supports are available.

Thank you, and we’ll see you back on campus tomorrow!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - Fire Incident and Temporary Campus Closure

What happened with the fire incident near NAIT's campus?

There was a significant fire incident at Hangar 11 on Blatchford near NAIT's campus April 22. The situation has been managed by Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services, and although there is significant damage to the site, there were no reported injuries or harm to individuals. There is no reported damage to NAIT property at this time.

How is NAIT responding to the fire incident?

NAIT is actively addressing the aftermath of the fire and prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and the broader community. We are providing alternative arrangements for students writing finals and ensuring ongoing updates through our official communication channels.

I'm a student currently writing finals. How will the fire incident impact my exams?

We are arranging alternative options for students writing finals to ensure their exams are completed with minimal disruption. Your academic progress and well-being are important to us, and we will communicate directly with affected students regarding these arrangements. Please continue to monitor your email for direct correspondence from your instructors and other NAIT representatives.

Will NAIT be automatically refunding parking fees for today due to the closure?

Yes, in light of the closure, NAIT will automatically refund all HONK transactions made for parking April 23. If you have paid for parking or redeemed a flexpass, you can expect a refund for today. If you paid via a pay station, please visit NAIT Parking Services at CAT180N with your credit card to process the refund in person when campus is accessible again. If you have questions, please email parking@nait.ca.

Was the Main Campus closed April 23 due to the fire incident?

Yes, the main campus was closed April 23. This includes all services (library, printing services, offices, classrooms, etc.). We recommended that staff, students, instructors and other NAIT contacts stay away from the main campus today as we continued to assess the air quality situation, but the campus will re-open April 24.

How can I stay updated on further developments regarding the campus operations?

While we have controls in place and have assessed air quality levels, we will continue to monitor air quality levels as work continues to remove debris from the site. We will provide updates of any changes in levels. Please monitor our official social media outlets, the NAIT Alert app, and your email for real-time updates and guidance regarding operations.

Where do I get the NAIT Alert app so I can receive updates?

Download the app from the App Store or Google Play. Enable push notifications and location services by clicking “About/Preferences” and then “Notification Settings.” Ensure “Enable Notifications” is on. Users may also have to go to their device’s notification settings and allow notifications from NAIT Alert.

What is happening with my class schedule?

It is possible that a rescheduled exam or critical lab might not appear on your schedule.  Follow your schedule unless you hear otherwise from your instructors and other NAIT representatives.

Why didn’t the NAIT Alert app notify me?

The NAIT Alert app is deployed in the middle of the night only when there is an immediate threat to personal health and safety. The app includes a phone call plus audible and persistent notification to thousands of mobile devices. As no immediate threat was present, the app would have unnecessarily disturbed thousands of families in the middle of the night. It was determined that the alert would be held until 6:00 a.m. when most families would be preparing for their day.

Please check your notification settings to ensure they are on and be sure to check notifications to receive the latest information.

Why weren’t we notified earlier?

Emergency coordination teams worked through the night to assess the safety of NAIT buildings and to determine if campus was safe for students and staff. Notifications were sent via email, shared on social accounts, and shared to media partners for distribution and updates on media's related stories as quickly as possible. Physical signage was also posted on every main entrance across campus. The emergency alert on NAIT.ca, MyNAIT student portal, staff intranet and the NAIT emergency microsite have also been updated.

What supports are available for students?

For any student in need of counselling support during business hours, please contact us at counselling@nait.ca or call 780-378-6133. Walk-ins are also welcome at our office located in W111PB, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm. We have urgent slot appointments available throughout the day to support walk-ins.

If you arrive on campus tomorrow and start to feel unwell, please connect with Health Services on Main Campus (S105). Alternatively, if students or staff have prior health concerns and are worried about having issues on campus, we ask them to connect with their programs and managers to discuss options to accommodate their needs. We are continuing to assess the air quality of different buildings as we move forward.

Poor air quality due to fire closes NAIT Main Campus

(Posted April 23, 8 a.m.) As a result of the Hangar 11 fire on Blatchford Monday night, poor air quality has been detected in buildings throughout NAIT's main campus.

The health and safety of the NAIT community is our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, all students and non-essential staff are asked to stay away from main campus on Tuesday, Apr. 23. All Main Campus Buildings are closed.

Where possible, classes will be moved online. Alternate arrangements will be made to allow students to complete exams. NAIT programs will be communicating directly with students. Staff are asked to work remotely where possible on Tuesday.

Once the smoke dissipates from the area and NAIT resumes normal operations of air handling units, indoor air quality assessments will be conducted within our main campus buildings.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates as air quality improves.

Hangar 11 was built in 1942 as a partnership with the US Air Force at Blatchford Field. It served in the Second World War as part of the Lend-Lease Program, moving American equipment through the Northwest Staging Route through Edmonton to Alaska and finally to Russia. At 80,000 square feet, the hangar was unique in that it was built entirely of wood rather than concrete, brick, or steel.

Following the Second World War, Hangar 11 remained an integral part of Edmonton’s Municipal Airport, serving the north.

Believed to be the last remaining building of its kind in Western Canada, in 2022 Hangar 11 was declared a Municipal Historic Resource by the City of Edmonton. It had been purchased by private company T3 Group with the aim of redeveloping it for residential, commercial and retail services for the neighbourhood.
