COVID-19 update for June 10: What stage 2 of Alberta’s Open for Summer plan means for NAIT

Today, Alberta has entered stage 2 of Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan. Stage 2 sees a further easing of some public health restrictions, while all other public health measures remain in place until further notice. Staff and students on campus must continue to follow public health guidelines, including keeping 2 metres apart and wearing a mask.
Impact to NAIT
NAIT has reviewed the details of stage 2 to determine its impact on our operations. While stage 2 allows for all in-person learning to resume, we will continue delivering our programs for the spring and summer terms as previously planned. As we transition to the fall term, we are planning for a more vibrant campus with an increased presence of staff and students. Students have received information from their programs about how their learning will be delivered this fall.
Effective today, the following changes will impact our community:
- Indoor dining is permitted; however, indoor gatherings are still prohibited. Food services seating areas will be reopened with a limit of 1 person per table.
- Libraries are permitted to open at one-third of fire code occupancy. The NAIT library will resume in-person services and make bookable study spaces available on June 14. Hours will continue to be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Makerspace and study lounge remain closed at this time.
- Retail capacity increase to one-third of fire code occupancy. Shop AT NAIT will increase their capacity to one-third.
There are no further impacts to NAIT in stage 2.
What’s next
Stage 3 of the government’s plan includes the lifting of all restrictions. It’s expected that stage 3 could come into effect in late June or early July, and is based on 70% of eligible Albertans receiving at least 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
While the COVID-19 vaccine is voluntary in Alberta, we encourage members of the NAIT community to get their vaccine as soon as they are eligible. This is the best way to help protect yourself and others and move us to the next stage of the province’s reopening plan. Please visit the Government of Alberta’s vaccine page to book your shot and for more information about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. As of today, those who received an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) are eligible to book their second dose and AstraZeneca recipients are eligible if they received their first dose at least eight weeks ago.
As Alberta enters stage 3, we will share more information about what this means for NAIT staff and students.
Keep our campuses safe
Help us continue to keep our campuses safe by doing the following:
- Continue to follow public health guidelines, including keeping 2 metres apart and/or wearing a mask.
- Stay home if you are sick or a close contact of a positive case. Coming to campus sick puts others at risk.
- Check-in each day and at each location where you spend more than 15 minutes. This will allow us to contact people on our campuses who are considered close contacts of positive cases of COVID-19.
- Download the NAIT Alert app for easy access to the check-in form or scan the check-in QR code that can be found on posters in common areas on our campuses.
- Take the AHS COVID-19 Self-Assessment each day before you come to campus or if you become ill and follow instructions from Alberta Health Services. Self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19 if advised.
