COVID-19 Update for July 6: Student recreation programs to be offered virtually this fall

Posted: Jul 6, 2020 9:35 AM   |  Updated: Jul 8, 2020 2:37 PM

On-campus recreation facilities at NAIT will not be available for general staff and student use this fall. Virtual programs will allow important recreation and well-being services to be accessible to all students while prioritizing the health and safety of our community.

This decision to not open on-campus recreation facilities aligns with NAIT’s staged approach to relaunch and the provincial government recommendations for post-secondary institutions to limit on-campus activity as much as possible.

In addition to helping us keep our campuses safe and clean, the decision supports our need to prioritize the resources, services and supports most critical to student learning.

Virtual recreation offerings

We recognize the importance fitness and recreation plays in the overall well-being of our students. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us to adapt and think about how we can deliver student services in new and innovative ways. Our virtual offerings mean that more students will be able to access our high-quality recreation programming.

Fitness programming such as Fitness on Demand and other unique NAIT recreation services will be available for all students to access safely and easily from wherever they are.

Our well-being team is working hard to plan a full suite of virtual programs that will include

  • a variety of weekly and monthly physical activity challenges

  • an online version of NAIT’s Mind + Body Connect fitness program created to improve mental and physical health

  • an opportunity to enhance physical and social well-being through a pilot project in partnership with NAIT’s Personal Fitness Trainer program

In addition to improving physical well-being, these programs will focus on building a sense of community and helping students strengthen their social connections at NAIT.

Reduced student fee

With recreation facilities not available and programming offered virtually this fall, the mandatory non-instructional Recreation and Athletics fee for students will be reduced by 50%.

This fee will ensure NAIT is able to continue to provide high-quality and innovative well-being and recreation experiences to all students. As of today, students can begin enrolling and paying their fall tuition; this fee will be included in your fees. This fee will be identified as a separate item on your student financial account.

2020-21 recreation programs

Please watch the student portal and NAIT’s website for more details on upcoming recreation programs and how you can access them.

Over time, as health considerations allow, on-campus recreation opportunities will be added back when it is determined to be safe.

What we learn from our virtual programs will be used to create an innovative approach to recreation at NAIT through a combination of both technology-enabled and physical facilities across all campus locations.
