On Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, a member of the NAIT community was approached in a parking lot on main campus by an individual in a vehicle who was inappropriately exposing himself. The incident was reported to NAIT Protective Services (NPS), who immediately notified Edmonton Police Services (EPS).

NPS immediately deployed patrols of the campus and started reviewing video surveillance, which confirmed that the suspect had left campus shortly after the incident occurred. NPS increased the frequency of high-visibility patrols of parking lots and used video surveillance patrols of all external areas on campus each day after the incident.

The suspect was arrested by EPS on Monday, Feb. 13 and remains in custody. NAIT is cooperating with the EPS investigation and has turned over video surveillance of the vehicle.

EPS has issued a statement asking for any other individuals approached by the accused to come forward with information to assist in the investigation. If any other members of the NAIT community believe they have information relevant to this case, please reach out to EPS directly at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.

This incident is now part of an ongoing police investigation, so we cannot provide further details or comments.

Keeping our campuses safe

The safety of the NAIT campus community is our top priority. We assess the risk of any incidents that occur on campus to determine whether emergency communication is required. In this case, the risk to the campus community was low as the suspect was no longer on campus, and it appeared to be an isolated incident. If the risk level changed at any time, we would have re-evaluated our need to communicate more broadly

If an act of violence is in progress or has just happened, priority one is to ensure you are safe. Call 911 if you need immediate help. If you are on NAIT property, you should then call NAIT Protective Services when it is safe to do so at 780.471.7477 or by using the “Emergency Contacts” button on the NAIT Alert mobile app.
