COVID-19 update for May 6: Changes to admission requirements

Posted: May 6, 2020 3:44 PM

NAIT recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and changed learning environments for students globally. We are making the following changes to our admissions practices to minimize the negative impact to our applicants while maintaining a fair and equitable admissions process.

Calculation of admissions GPA for NAIT students

These processes will be followed for applications that are in progress, and any future NAIT applications that include the revised Winter 2020 grading scheme

For post-secondary admissions pathway:

  • Post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term with the grade of P or H will be counted towards meeting the credit or specific course requirement.

  • For all future intakes, grades issued for post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term will not be included in the calculation of admission GPA.

  • If you do not meet the required admission GPA for the post-secondary pathway and you were enrolled in courses in Winter 2020 that were converted to the H/P/F grading scale, you may be admitted into your chosen program if you have an admission GPA of 1.7 or higher and meet all other entrance requirements.

For Open Studies pathway:

  • Post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term with the grade of P or H will be counted towards meeting the credit or specific course requirements.

  • For all future intakes, grades issued for post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term will not be included in the calculation of GPA. Exceptions: programs that were approved to issue letter grades in Winter 2020 due to licensure or accreditation requirements.

  • If you do not meet the GPA requirement for the Open Studies pathway and you were enrolled in courses in Winter 2020 that were converted to the H/P/F grading scale, you may be admitted into your chosen program if you have achieved a GPA of 1.7 or higher in the required courses and meet all other entrance requirements.

Calculation of admissions GPA for students entering NAIT from other post-secondaries

These processes will be followed for applications that are in progress, and any future NAIT applications that include the revised Winter 2020 grading scheme.

  • Post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term with passing grades will be counted towards meeting the credit or specific course requirements.

  • For all future intakes, grades issued for post-secondary courses completed in the Winter 2020 term will not be included in the calculation of admission GPA for post-secondary admissions pathway.

  • If you do not meet the required admission GPA and you were enrolled in courses in Winter 2020 that were converted to the Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit grading scale, you may be admitted into your chosen program if you have an admission GPA of 1.7 or higher and meet all other entrance requirements.

Final marks requirements for high school applicants

For domestic applicants: NAIT continues to accept final in-class marks for admissions. Diploma marks are not required.

For international applicants: If an international applicant is unable to provide provincial or national exam results due to exam cancellations, NAIT will accept the last marks available in lieu of provincial or national exam marks.

English Language Proficiency (ELP)

The Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition Test will be made available to all applicants as additional options to demonstrate English Language Proficiency for Spring 2020, Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Winter 2021 and Spring 2021 admissions.

Transcripts and documents

Please submit any documents you have, whether they are official or unofficial. Documents can be uploaded via your myNAIT portal.  At this point in time, we will accept unofficial documents to ensure we can continue to process applications.

Conditional admissions may be granted based on unofficial documents with a deadline to submit official documents by July 31, 2020.

If you have already received a conditional offer, we will extend your deadline to submit official documents to July 31, 2020.

Please contact Registrar@nait.ca if you are concerned about meeting this deadline to explore options.

At this time, NAIT will accept electronic copies of documents sent directly from the school to Registrar@nait.ca as official documents. Documents that are not transcripts must be on school letterhead. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as necessary. Please check back on this page for updates.

Transfer credit

Post-secondary courses completed in Winter 2020 with a passing grade will be exempted from the minimum grade requirement to be considered for transfer credit in all NAIT programs.

If you have any questions about these changes or require further support with your application, please contact the Student Service Centre.
