COVID-19 update for Dec. 7: NAIT Peace officers to enforce public health orders

Posted: Dec 7, 2020 8:28 AM

On Nov. 27, the province granted peace officers the authority to enforce orders issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Health under the Public Health Act. Enforcement powers are in effect until Feb. 25, 2021.

Under this order, NAIT’s peace officers can issue provincial tickets of $1,200 ($1,000 fine, $200 victim’s surcharge) to individuals who violate public health orders on our campuses, including

  • not wearing masks
  • breaking isolation requirements for those who tested positive for COVID-19
  • breaking quarantine requirements for those who are close contacts
  • having social gatherings

The health, safety and well-being of our community remain our top priorities as we support additional public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As always, NAIT will continue to take an education-first approach when responding to cases of non-compliance. Our peace officers will use discretion and speak with the individual first. They may give warnings and issue trespass notices under the Trespass to Premises Act, prohibiting the individual from being on campus.

NAIT Protective Services may also report student violations to the Student Resolution Officer, who will determine appropriate actions. Violations by staff or contractors may be reported to the area leadership.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise to record levels in Alberta, all members of our community are reminded that we all have a responsibility to follow health and safety measures to protect the NAIT community and help reduce the pressures on Alberta’s health system.

Thank you for doing  your part to prevent transmission on our campuses. Check nait.ca/Covid19 for the latest information on NAIT’s response to COVID-19. If you have questions, email relaunch@nait.ca
