COVID-19 Update for Nov. 9: Active cases of COVID-19

Posted: Nov 9, 2020 4:04 PM

On Nov. 8, NAIT was informed that a member of our community who was on Main Campus tested positive for COVID-19. The individual was last on campus on Nov. 4. Members of the NAIT community who have been identified as close contacts of the individual, meaning they were within 2 metres of the individual for more than 15 minutes, have been contacted and directed to quarantine for 14 days.

This has created staffing challenges for Retail and Ancillary Services. As a result, the following food services locations will be temporarily closed:

  • Main Campus: One World (reopening Nov. 23)
  • Main Campus: Gourmet Take Away (reopening Nov. 23)
  • Souch Campus: Elements (reopening Nov. 10)

On Main Campus, please visit bytes and Fresh Express for your food service needs.

We wish all members of the NAIT community who have tested positive for COVID-19 a speedy recovery.

To protect the individual’s privacy, we will not be releasing any information that could lead to their identification. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

The risk of transmission of COVID-19 on our campuses remains low

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 being spread through food or food packaging.

At NAIT, we have put in place enhanced measures to reduce the risk of transmission, including the use of face masks and face shields, as well as additional cleaning and sanitation of all spaces after each use, and have a rapid response plan to guide our response to cases of COVID-19. Because of these measures, which prioritize the health and safety of our community, all scheduled activities at NAIT can continue as planned.

As cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Edmonton, we are seeing more cases among members of the NAIT community.

We have had 35 positive COVID-19 cases on campus. Alberta Health Services has not determined a link between any of these cases. Cases are no longer considered active after the mandatory self-isolation period has ended or when an individual receives a negative test.

Keeping our community safe is a shared responsibility

Preventing the spread of COVID-19, both on and off campus, is a shared responsibility. We all have to do our part to lower transmission in Edmonton and keep the risk of transmission on our campuses low.

Screening for illness is an essential part of NAIT’s strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19. We remind you to take the Alberta Health Services COVID-19 Self-Assessment each day before you come to campus or if you become ill, and to follow instructions from Alberta Health Services. Self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19 if advised. Report your absence to your instructor or supervisor and complete a NAIT Health and Safety Incident Report if you have symptoms. Stay home until your symptoms resolve, even if you have tested negative for COVID-19.

Please only come to campus for your scheduled activity and leave immediately after.

When on campus, remember to:

  • complete the check-in form every day you come to campus and for each location in which you spend more than 15 minutes, even if you are scheduled to be on campus (this allows us to contact people who are considered close contacts of positive cases of COVID-19)
  • practice physical distancing and good hygiene
  • wear a face mask in all indoor public spaces
  • stay home if you are sick
  • follow other specific requirements of your program or department
  • continue to act responsibly

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe.
