COVID-19 Update for June 23: What step 3 of the Government of Alberta’s lifting of public health measures means for NAIT

Posted: Jun 23, 2022 10:07 AM   |  Updated: Jun 30, 2022 8:05 AM

Last week, the Government of Alberta lifted all remaining COVID-19 public health measures as it moved the province to step 3 on June 14.

As we have throughout the pandemic, we are adjusting our health and safety measures in response to changing public health guidance, the trajectory of the pandemic and the needs of the community. As public health measures are no longer in place, we are suspending the following COVID-19 administrative controls, including the Rapid Response Planning Framework, COVID-19 General Safety Guidance and RCT-100 COVID-19 Awareness Training.

To that end, we are making the following changes to our safety measures:

Staying home while sick recommended, not mandatory

While isolation is no longer mandatory for those who test positive for or have symptoms of COVID-19, it is recommended that you stay home if you are sick. Students, please notify your instructor or program designate. Staff, please notify your supervisor.

We will support student progression through courses where possible. Staff will follow standard practice and collective agreement requirements regarding medical notes and use of casual and general illness, and Special Leave usage.

Reporting of COVID-19 cases on campus discontinued

Effective today, NAIT is no longer notifying individuals who shared a space with the person who tested positive, and we are no longer reporting confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the COVID-19 Cases Dashboard. To comply with OHS requirements, we still ask that students and staff complete a COVID-19 incident report through myCority if they test positive within 14 days of being on campus. We continue to monitor COVID-19 case counts and assess their impact to NAIT campus operations in accordance with Alberta OHS legislation.

RCT 100 COVID-19 training and declarations no longer required

Staff and students are no longer required to complete the RCT 100 COVID-19 Awareness Training or the Responsibility Declaration Form. The training will still be available for staff and students as a resource. Up-to-date information about safety measures can still be found on our COVID-19 website.

Mask usage

We support masking in all public spaces on NAIT campuses and at NAIT facilities. Masks continue to be required in Health Services offices or where masks are part of the standard personal protective equipment. Masks are available through shop at NAIT. Please be kind and understanding as everyone makes the choice around masking that is best for them.

Help NAIT maintain a safe learning environment

  • We encourage everyone coming to our campuses to be fully vaccinated and to get their booster shots as soon as they are eligible. Vaccination against COVID-19 remains the best way to prevent severe illness and death, and booster shots can prolong immunity to improve protection and limit spread.
  • Let’s continue to practice good hygiene – keep your hands clean, cover your coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing personal items like utensils and water bottles. We will continue providing hand sanitizer stations at campus main entrances and in high-occupancy areas.
  • Leaders are required to complete and maintain a Communicable Viruses Hazard Assessment for their area.

Please continue to be kind and understanding with one another as we transition through this next phase of the pandemic. We encourage members of the NAIT community to reach out to one another for support and to access the many resources available.

Thank you for continuing to do your part to keep the NAIT community safe.
